ABOUT

Student experience

At Yoh Theatre, students in grades 7-12 take center stage, exploring their creativity, building confidence, and becoming part of a vibrant theatre community.

Yoh Theatre Players produce five shows each year, ranging from musicals to dramatic and comedic non-musicals. Whether you love to sing, dance, act, or work behind the scenes, there’s something for everyone.

If you’re interested in getting involved with Yoh Theatre, or want to learn more about our process, get in touch with director Marcia Bender.

Workshops

Yoh students have the opportunity to work with local and professional theatre artists to improve their knowledge of different aspects of the theatrical craft.  Past workshops include lighting and sound design, vocal technique, dance and stage movement, circus performance, devised theater, costume design and mime.

YOH Masters

Participation in the program can lead to the distinguished title of Yoh Master. To earn this recognition, students must participate in at least seven shows as a high school player, showcasing their commitment and skill in acting, singing, dancing, technical work and leadership.

Speakchorus

Each year at Woodstock Union High School's graduation, senior Yoh Players perform a speakchorus to celebrate their class. Created by former Yoh Theatre director Harriet Worrell, speakchorus is an artform of spoken word, combining quotes, poetry, and original writing. The graduation performance includes brief descriptions of each senior and themed content provided by teachers and students.

Learning trips

Yoh Theatre Players take their passion for the arts beyond the stage, traveling to renowned festivals and cultural destinations that expand their horizons and celebrate their craft.

In August 2018, the Yoh Theatre Players performed their rendition of Bakkhai by Anne Carson at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, one of the world’s largest celebrations of arts and culture. As part of the American High School Theater Festival, they had the chance to showcase their talents, connect with other theatre groups, and attend performances from artists across the globe.

Closer to home, students visited the Stratford Festival in Stratford, Ontario, in 2017 and 2019. Over two days, they saw professional productions such as Twelfth Night, Billy Elliot the Musical, and Private Lives, while also enjoying dinners together, a stay at the charming As You Like It Motel, and excursions to the Stratford Perth Museum and Niagara Falls.

Looking ahead, Yoh Theatre Players will return to Edinburgh in Summer 2025 to perform again at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, continuing this legacy of exploration, performance, and cultural exchange.
